In the Heart of the Sea is a 2015 American action-adventure drama film directed by Ron Howard and written by Charles Leavitt. It is loosely based on the 1820 sinking of which inspired Herman Melville's 1851 novel Moby-Dick. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Ben Whishaw and Rachel Hurd-Wood. In the wake of a severe storm in the , a whaling ship is destroyed and sunk by an enraged sperm whale. In its aftermath, the sole survivor, first mate Owen Chase is rescued and brought to shore by local villagers from Chile's Chiloé Island. While there, he is forced to tell an unbelievable story of the whale’s rampage to authorities in order to get a room at the local inn. Meanwhile, the damaged whale drifts into Captain George Pollard's ship, also offshore. The enraged animal repeatedly damages the ship until it sinks. Its crew are dragged underwater by the sinking ship. All but Pollard are killed or eaten by sharks while Pollard is left clinging to broken spars in his lifeboat. He is eventually rescued by sailors who see his distress signal, but he succumbs to exhaustion and hypothermia before reaching land. Shortly afterward, by chance Owen's ship arrives in port and Owen is reunited with Pollard. Both the survivors initially keep the events surrounding their encounter with the whale a secret from their new compatriots, but they eventually share them after finding out that other ships were attacked by the same whale and their crews consumed. With his ship destroyed and its crew dead, Chase convinces Pollard to hire on as a first mate on his ship "Essex". The "Essex" returns to Nantucket Island. On shore, as part of the settlement with the townspeople over property damage caused by the whale, Chase draws his story of their experience. The villagers, led by the town's "Sealer of Wrongs" George Pollard, feel that Owen is lying about what has happened. By this time, the whale has moved on. Owen believes that he will be able to find it and kill it. However, when they approach Nantucket Island, they are told by a local man that there are no further signs of the whale anywhere on the ocean nor is any whale bone or tooth found.
