If you're a cord cutter, the best way to make a one-time payment for a streaming service is with a gift card. But not all gift cards are created equal! If you have an Amazon Prime membership, it might be too tempting to purchase that Amazon gift card from Amazon Prime itself because it'll save you money on your membership renewal. And while that's tempting, it's not wise if you're also planning on cashing in that Amazon gift card! In this post we explain why and offer up our favorite way to earn Amazon credit without spending any money at all. This post is part of our Evil Week series at Consumerist. Join us as we try to figure out how to squeeze more evil into the world with our upcoming Evil Week story on April 1, 2016. If you’re a cord cutter, there’s no easier way to recompense the company that supplies you with your favorite streaming media service than with a gift card. You can get them at your local supermarket or drug store, or if you have an Amazon Prime membership there’s another place you can get them. Amazon offers its own balance-loading gift cards, just like Apple does for iTunes and Google does for Google Play Music. Amazon gift cards are good for Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, Amazon.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.es, Amazon.fr or Amazon.it gift cards to be used at any of these websites or to be redeemed for physical goods through the “Gift Cards” section of your account on Amazon’s website (as long as you’re an actual customer). Amazon doesn't offer its gift cards by phone so you'll have to go onto the site and manually add funds onto your account or take that money and purchase an item at another retailer that accepts gift cards (they don't appear on other gift card websites). It’s possible to earn a free 5-digit number from this method, but you'll still have to spend a little bit of money to receive the funds. You can also use a workaround to get a free 8-digit number along with a few other benefits by creating an account on the site, signing up for the service and spending some money. It's not worth it but it is possible. If you're reading this article it's likely that you don't have an Amazon Prime membership, or that you've already spent some amount of money at Amazon and want some extra credit. If you're a long-time reader of this site, I hope you understand that these tips aren't going to get you free Prime, but they do offer a way to get credit without spending any money. Go to amazon.com/prime and select “Manage Your Prime Membership” from the drop-down menu at the top of the page. Select your membership from the right hand column labeled “Prime Membership Status” or choose from one of the other subscription plans. Click on “Your Orders and Balance” and then click view orders in the drop down menu at the top (or scroll down and click that link in black and white). cfa1e77820
